I’m so excited to be celebrating CK Hoffman Design’s 10th anniversary! I want to share the story of my career and how I got to where I am today.
After finishing a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Design from UCLA, I worked in both the Residential and Interior Design industry for about three years in the LA area before moving to Portland in the late 80s. After I arrived in Portland, I worked in commercial interiors, then my husband and I began investing, building and remodeling in Portland and Bend and in Sacramento, California.
I officially took a pause from my professional design career in the early 90s when we started our family. In 1999, I realized it would be a while before I re-entered the work force. Trying to think ahead, and still be relevant by the time I started work again, I took a leap of faith and opened my own design business, originally naming it “Interior Design Consultants.” While working with my husband in real estate investment, I began taking on home build and remodel clients to create my portfolio.
In 2009, I finally saw the writing on the wall, and knew that I only a few years left before my youngest left for college. I realized that if I was serious about having a business, I’d better start moving it along.
I hired a graphic designer to design a logo and business card, a photographer to take a head shot, and professional photos of my work and a website designer. I also decided to change my business name and CK Hoffman Design was born.
Persistence, hard work, dedication and a few lucky breaks got me into the game. I joined the Cedar Mill Business Association and partnered with the Sherwin Williams store by Safeway at the corner of NW Cornell and Murray Roads.
Our agreement was that I would offer their clients free paint color consultations one Saturday a month, I would pick up leads and they would also send me referrals. I did this for them for five years, and it worked out beautifully. The guys and gals there are still some of my best friends and supporters.
The next turn in my journey came in 2016, when I finally got my General Contractor’s license. After 20 plus years partnering and collaborating with other GCs, it just made sense to keep everything “in house” (literally). I had the knowledge and experience to streamline my business, creating a win-win for myself and my clients. I became known as a Kitchen and Bath Designer/Remodeler and am now expanding my business to focus on decorating and home décor. Follow me on Instagram: @the_curated_home_pdx.
